Useful bratting has a shared language. Partners may recognise a particular grin, phrase, tone, gesture, or recurring game as an invitation to respond. The behaviour supports the dynamic because both understand its scene meaning.
A real objection, bad mood, or refusal is not improved by treating it as brat performance. The tamer needs to tell the difference between an invitation to play and information that the game is not happening.

People may still use the words loosely, but SAM names a masochistic motive that brat does not. Name the form of resistance, its usual cue, and what response makes it fun. Cheek, loopholes, escape, dares, delay, and physical struggle ask for different tamer skills.
Add the tone and stopping distinction. 'I like sarcastic banter and being verbally outmatched, but not punishment roleplay' gives the exchange a shape without turning it into a personality judgement.
