Restraint vocabulary is wider than a choice between cuffs and rope. The Homosaurus restraint entry groups handcuffs, legcuffs, ropes, chains, straps, and straitjackets under restraints, with cuffs and spreader bars as narrower equipment terms. For a scene, the useful question is what creates the restriction and what movement remains.
Cuffs, rope, wrap, straps, furniture, and instruction each restrict movement in a different way. Compare the material, form, movement, learning, release, and scene function before deciding which one fits the experience you want.

A purpose-made wrist or ankle cuff is a fitted band with a closure and an attachment point. Leather, synthetic leather, neoprene, and fabric change its stiffness, stretch, bulk, surface, and appearance. Rigid metal cuffs and shackles create a narrower, harder form. In either case, the restraint has its shape before it goes on the body.
The cuff limits movement at one point, but the connector decides the larger geometry. A short strap joins limbs closely, a chain allows a measured range, a spreader bar holds limbs apart, and an anchor fixes them relative to another object. Buckles, clips, hook-and-loop panels, and locks each have their own release. This family suits quick transitions, repeatable placement, and a clear captured look without making construction the centre of the scene.
Rope is a continuous line used to make the restraint in place. Fibre and construction are separate choices: jute, hemp, cotton, nylon, and polyester do not handle alike, and twisted rope behaves differently from braided rope. Shibari Study's construction guide explains that twisted rope compacts readily into frictions, while many braided ropes are stiffer and hold knots or frictions differently. Material, diameter, construction, and condition all affect the finished tie.
Rope can join two points, form a harness, frame a posture, decorate the body, or attach it to an anchor. It may leave most movement intact or create close restriction. Because every pass is placed during the scene, the tying process can supply ritual, anticipation, touch, craft, and visual change as well as the final restraint.
Rope learning covers both the person and the structure. Temple's published rope curriculum teaches knots, frictions, rope handling, body handling, and simple ties at its first technical level, harness construction at the next, and partial suspension later. Rope may be unfastened, unwound, or cut. Pressure, load, and release need to be understood before a tie is used on a person.
Bondage tape is a wide sheet rather than a cord or fitted device. A purpose-made PVC tape description specifies that the material sticks to itself rather than to skin or hair. It can make smooth bands, join limbs, or build a glossy surface quickly. Unlike a buckle, a wrapped band usually has to be partly unwrapped or remade to change its fit.
Ordinary adhesive tape is a different material with glue and a different release problem. Wrap also changes category as coverage grows. The Homosaurus entry for erotic mummification defines it as wrapping the body with bandages, plastic wrap, or other materials. A band around two limbs and near-total encasement differ sharply in movement, temperature, self-adjustment, and release.
Straps use a pre-made length, slider, buckle, or clip but can be routed into different systems. They bridge the repeatable fit of cuffs and the reach of rope without asking the user to construct a tie. For example, Sportsheets' under-bed system connects four adjustable cuffs to a central strap beneath a mattress. It is a portable strap layout. Fastening a restraint to the bed frame creates a fixed-point system.
Straps and harnesses can join, anchor, spread, or support. They can also make movement easier. Enhance the UK's guide by occupational therapist Katherine Sellors describes cuffed fabric straps, spreader bars, and harness arrangements that can support a limb or help a partner reposition it. In that context, the scene function may be access, support, or easier movement. Learning centres on the exact routing, adjustment, connector, and release rather than a knot sequence.
Beds, benches, frames, bars, and purpose-built furniture provide a surface, posture, or attachment point. A cuff, strap, rope, or other connector still creates the restraint. Once the body is fixed relative to the room, the location and direction of pull can matter more than whether the connector is leather, webbing, chain, or rope.
Furniture can support standing, kneeling, lying, bent-over, or spread positions, and it can make display or access the scene's main function. Release depends on the last connection between body and structure. Any fixed point must withstand the direction of pull as well as the expected load, including movement during the scene.
Instruction-based restraint is often called honour bondage. The Lascivity kink glossary defines it as remaining still or holding a position without a physical restraint. Nothing physical holds the pose, so the person can end it by moving. The instruction and the desire to follow it create the restriction.
Movement can be precise or conditional: hands behind the back, a held pose, one marked spot, or permission required before changing position. This family suits obedience, display, stillness, and anticipation without an equipment aesthetic. Its learning burden is communication and choosing a posture that can actually be held. A pose should change when the body can no longer maintain it, even though no buckle or knot needs opening.
Do not treat these families as a ladder from beginner to advanced. Choose the mechanism you want to notice, then compare the work it asks of the people using it.
Instruction-based restraint has no equipment mechanism to learn. Familiar cuffs and simple strap systems usually ask for less construction skill than rope, although their fit, connectors, and release still need to be understood.
