Hotwife and stag/vixen are gendered community labels for a partner-sharing dynamic in which a woman has outside sexual experiences and her established partner finds the arrangement erotic. SDC's current swinging-community glossary uses hotwife or vixen for the woman and stag for the male partner. It also notes that a hotwife does not have to be legally married and that a stag may watch, join, or stay away from an encounter.
The words are common labels, not fixed roles. Hotwife may put more weight on her independent choices and adventures. Stag/vixen often signals a couple's shared pride and excitement without the inferior status or humiliation found in some cuckolding scripts. People use the terms differently, and many choose broader partner-sharing language when the gendered pair does not fit.

The outside experience can be independent or something the couple shapes together. One partner may choose the date and keep it separate; the established partner may help plan, receive updates, watch, join, or hear about it later. Presence and participation are separate from the role label.

A peer-reviewed study of consensually non-monogamous partners describes open relationships as allowing outside sex together or separately, swinging as commonly involving established partners and others in the same social setting, and polyamory as allowing multiple romantic or sexual relationships. The same role label can appear inside different arrangements.

Name whether the interest is fantasy or real outside contact, then say who chooses, who is present, and what can happen afterwards. Add the emotional centre: pride, freedom, jealousy, possession, service, novelty, romance, or reunion.
Role labels are less informative than the next sentence. 'I like the stag role because I want to watch and feel proud, not be humiliated' draws a useful boundary. So does 'I like hotwife fantasy, but only as dirty talk.'
